DEADLINE EXTENDED FOR AGRICULTURAL MANAGEMENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM APPLICATIONS

Honolulu, March 6, 2009 -- Applications are being accepted for the Agricultural Management Assistance Program, administered by the United States Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). Interested farmers and ranchers have until March 27, 2009 to submit their applications to be considered for this ranking period.

“We’re focusing our conservation efforts on treating identified priority natural resource concerns on lands being used to produce agricultural products,” says Lawrence Yamamoto, Director of the Pacific Islands Area for the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).

Previously, the Agricultural Management Assistance Program was available in 15 states and Hawaii was just added as a qualifying state. The Agricultural Management Assistance (AMA) provides cost share assistance to agricultural producers to voluntarily address issues such as water management, water quality, and erosion control by incorporating conservation into their farming operations. Producers may construct or improve water management structures or irrigation structures; plant trees for windbreaks or to improve water quality; and mitigate risk through production diversification or resource conservation practices, including soil erosion control, integrated pest management, or transition to organic farming. For a full description of the program eligibility, please visit www.nrcs.usda.gov/programs.

Interested farmers and ranchers are asked to call their local NRCS Field Office for more information. To find the office nearest you, visit www.pia.nrcs.usda.gov. USDA is an equal opportunity employer and provider.
