GSA Celebrates $8.93M Renovation of Hilo’s Federal Building

Project restores original design features while modernizing

HILO, Hawaii – The U.S. General Services Administration will celebrate the completion of an $8.93 million renovation project at the Hilo Federal Building and U.S. Post Office at an event on October 20, 2011 at 2 pm. The Hilo Federal Building and U.S. Post Office is the oldest federal property in Hawaii and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. This is the first major building renovation since the wings were added in 1938. The renovation and modernization of the Hilo facility includes a seismic upgrade, roof repair as well as security and life safety improvements. Additionally, GSA significantly improved energy efficiency in the building by replacing the central heating, ventilation and air conditioning system, expanding the core mechanical systems and increasing daylighting by restoring the original dome skylights.

Regional Administrator Ruth Cox will provide remarks on how the project restores the building’s most significant design features while modernizing to meet current safety standards and reduce energy consumption.
