SUCCESSFUL WORKSHOP HELD FOR SHEEP AND GOAT PRODUCERS
HONOLULU, October 5, 2011 -- The Hawaii Sheep and Goat Association held their annual two-day workshop recently on Maui. 24 sheep, goat, and cattle producers from across the state attended the event. In partnership with the Hawaii Grazing Land Conservation Initiative (HI-GLCI), the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) provided funding, office support, and field expertise for this workshop.
"We are pleased to help sponsor educational events like this to help our livestock producers," said Mr. Angel Figueroa, NRCS Director of the Pacific Islands Area.
At the workshop, participants had classroom time, laboratory work and field experience. Topics that were integrated across these learning styles included proper pasture management, feed and forage sources and nutrition, parasite identification and control, and body condition scoring. In addition to the animal husbandry issues, flock and herd economic skills were taught, primarily in determining and increasing profits, as well as exploring the economics of mobile slaughter. All participants exchanged ideas and networks for sheep and goat marketing opportunities for meat and breed stock.
